Some people get paranoid when they leave by taxi to the airport. My friend James is an example. He would call a cab to pick them up from his neighbor’s house instead of his own, just to avoid letting the cab driver (and his friends) know that his house will be vacant during his vacation. On shorter trips, James would drive to Park & Jet at the airport and leave his car there. I would do the same but at today’s prices, I am always looking for a more economical airport transfer.
Park & Jet (Calgary)’s daily rates are $11.95 per day and $71.70 per week. If you have a BCAA, AMA (or AAA for US), you can SHOW YOUR CARD and save 20% off. If you don’t have either one of these cards, you can print off a coupon that will save you 75 cents per day. If you don’t care to save some money, be sure to show your AEROPLAN card to earn up to 500 miles (ie. 8+ days).
Another way that my friend James has taught me is to rent a car twice. From downtown, you can pick up a car and drive yourself to the airport where you return it. Then when you return from your trip, you pick up another vehicle and return it downtown. I had the pleasure to travel with James to Europe last fall and we did exactly that. James rented a car from Budget for $39 per day. On the morning of our travel, I drove my car to James’ place and parked it on his driveway. We transferred our luggage to the rental car and James drove it to the airport and returned it. When we arrived back from our trip, James picked up another vehicle for $27 per day and drove it back to his house where our car was parked. He returned the car to a downtown location on the next day, on his way to work. In total, we paid $66 for airport transfer. If we took a cab, it would have cost him $60 and $100 for us, bringing the total to $160 for the four of us. If we chose the Park & Jet solution, it would have cost $143.40 for parking so you can see why it was more economical for us to rent the cars.
